Chevrolet Tahoe review for Colorado buyers

The Tahoe is the Colorado family SUV for people who need it all at once: eight or nine seats, real cargo space behind the third row, and a tow rating of up to 8,400 pounds when properly equipped. The 2021 redesign is the key dividing line, with an independent rear suspension and much more third-row and cargo room. The Duramax diesel is the efficient pick for I-70 ski weekends. Check the 6.2L V8 recall on 2021-2024 trucks.

Our editorial rating

How it fits Colorado

Scored 1 to 5 for the way people here actually drive. These are our judgments, based on the facts below. Select a rating for the reasoning.

  • 4WD is widely available and the Z71 offers a two-speed transfer case, but a heavy SUV still needs proper winter-rated tires on a snowy pass.

Which Tahoe generation to look at

5th generation (refreshed) 2025-present

The 2025 update added a standard 17.7-inch touchscreen and 11-inch digital cluster, moved the shifter to the column, and brought an updated 3.0L Duramax rated at 305 hp and 495 lb-ft, up 28 hp and 35 lb-ft. The 5.3L and 6.2L V8s carried over.

What to check on a used one
  • The Duramax is no longer offered on the LS trim for 2025
  • Max tow rating is 8,400 pounds in a 2WD 5.3L configuration; 4WD trims such as the Z71 are rated lower
  • 6.2L trucks call for premium fuel per the EPA
  • Run the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup, as with any newer vehicle

The Tahoe for Colorado buyers

Why the 2021 redesign matters for families

If you have kids who are growing out of a midsize SUV, the 2021 and newer Tahoe is a different vehicle from the one before it. GM replaced the solid rear axle with an independent rear suspension. Third-row legroom grew from about 24.8 inches to about 34.9, and space behind the third row grew by roughly 10 cubic feet.

On the 2025 Tahoe that works out to 25.5 cubic feet behind the third row, 72.6 behind the second and up to 122.9 with the rear seats folded. Seating is nine on the LS and eight on other trims. For a family of six with duffels, boots and a cooler heading to Breckenridge, that's room inside for people and gear without a roof box.

The 2015-2020 Tahoe is still a capable SUV and usually costs less, but if adults or teenagers ride in the third row, sit back there before you buy. Our Kia Telluride review is worth a look if you want three rows in a smaller package.

Engines at altitude and the Duramax option

Most Tahoes have the 5.3L V8 (355 hp, 383 lb-ft). Upper trims offer the 6.2L V8 (420 hp, 460 lb-ft), and the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six is rated at 305 hp and 495 lb-ft for 2025, up 28 hp and 35 lb-ft from the earlier version.

Both V8s are naturally aspirated. Turbo maker Garrett cites a rule of thumb that naturally aspirated engines lose about 3 percent of their power per 1,000 feet of elevation, and explains that turbocharging compensates. So on paper the turbo-diesel holds more of its output climbing to the Eisenhower Tunnel with a full load. We haven't measured it; it's the published physics.

The Duramax also wins on fuel. The EPA rates a 2025 4WD Duramax Tahoe at 22 mpg combined versus 16 to 17 for a 4WD 5.3L. On a weekly ski run, that adds up. If you want help finding a diesel Tahoe specifically, use our specific vehicle request.

Snow, 4WD and I-70 ski traffic

For Colorado, get 4WD. The Z71 comes with 4WD, and packages on 2021 and newer trucks add a two-speed Autotrac transfer case with low range. Some trucks also have Air Ride Adaptive Suspension with Magnetic Ride Control. Equipment varies by package, so check the window sticker or build sheet.

A Tahoe is heavy, and weight helps stability but doesn't help it stop on ice. Tires matter most. CDOT's Traction Law on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero is in effect from September 1 through May 31 and centers on tread depth and tire ratings, or chains. Our guide to buying a used car for Colorado winters covers what to check on a used SUV.

Hail is the other Colorado risk with a big roof. Look down the roof and hood in good light, and read our notes on hail damage and used cars.

Towing with a full cabin

The Tahoe's best tow rating for 2025 is 8,400 pounds, and that's a 2WD 5.3L truck with the Max Trailering package. The same package rates the 6.2L and diesel at 8,200. Without the package, the 2WD 5.3L drops to 7,900, and 4WD trims are rated lower still; KBB lists the 2025 Z71 at 7,600 pounds.

Here's the catch for families: a full cabin and luggage use up the same payload that tongue weight needs. Check the payload on the driver's door-jamb label, add up passengers and gear, then add tongue weight. A Tahoe pulling a mid-size camper with seven people inside can run out of payload before it runs out of tow rating.

If you plan to tow a camper over the passes, read our guide to towing a camper in the mountains, and if you need more rating, a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 shares the Tahoe's engines with up to 13,300 pounds of tow rating when properly equipped.

The 6.2L recall and other used-Tahoe checks

GM recall 25V-274, issued in April 2025, covers 2021-2024 Tahoes with the L87 6.2L V8 built between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM's filing cited supplier problems with connecting rods and crankshafts that can damage rod bearings and cause engine failure. Depending on a dealer inspection, the remedy is a 0W-40 oil change or a replacement engine.

NHTSA opened a further inquiry in January 2026 into whether that remedy works. On a 6.2L Tahoe, ask for the recall paperwork, look up the VIN on NHTSA's site, and treat a documented engine replacement as useful history. The 5.3L and Duramax are not part of this recall.

FAQ

Chevrolet Tahoe questions

Is the Chevy Tahoe good in snow?

Yes, with 4WD and good tires. The Z71 adds 4WD, and many trucks have a two-speed transfer case with low range. A Tahoe's weight helps stability but makes stopping on ice harder, so winter-rated tires with deep tread matter most.

How much can a Chevy Tahoe tow?

Up to 8,400 pounds for a 2025 2WD 5.3L with the Max Trailering package. 4WD versions are rated lower, with KBB listing the 2025 Z71 at 7,600 pounds. Check the specific vehicle's door-jamb label and remember a full cabin eats into payload; our guide to towing a camper in the mountains explains the math.

How many people does a Tahoe seat?

The 2025 Tahoe seats nine on the LS trim and eight on the others. On 2021 and newer models the third row has about 34.9 inches of legroom, much more than the roughly 24.8 inches in the 2015-2020 truck.

Is the Tahoe diesel worth it in Colorado?

For high highway miles, often yes. The EPA rates the 2025 4WD Duramax at 22 mpg combined versus 16 to 17 for the 4WD 5.3L, and as a turbo engine it holds power better at altitude. Diesel fuel and diesel-specific service are the trade-offs.

Is my Tahoe's 6.2L V8 part of the recall?

If it's a 2021-2024 Tahoe with the L87 6.2L built between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024, it's likely covered by recall 25V-274. Enter the VIN at NHTSA's recall site to be sure, and ask the seller for the dealer paperwork.

How much cargo space does a Tahoe have with all seats up?

On the 2025 Tahoe, 25.5 cubic feet behind the third row. Fold the third row and it's 72.6 cubic feet; fold both rear rows and it's up to 122.9.

Should I buy a 2021+ Tahoe or an older one?

Buy the 2021 or newer truck if the third row gets regular use or you pack heavy for ski trips. The 2015-2020 Tahoe is usually less expensive and works well for families who rarely use the third row.

Tahoe or Silverado for a family that tows?

The Tahoe if you need three rows and moderate towing. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 shares its engines and is rated up to 13,300 pounds, but you lose the third row and covered cargo space.

How we review

This is a buyer's review, not a road test. We compile facts from the sources below (manufacturer information, EPA fuel economy data, NHTSA recall records and similar), then add our view as a Colorado brokerage on how the vehicle suits winter, altitude, towing and trail use. Ratings are our editorial judgment. Specifications change by year and trim, so we confirm details for any specific vehicle before you buy. Spotted something wrong? Tell us and we'll correct it.
