Ram 1500 review for Colorado buyers
The current Ram 1500 has used a coil-spring rear suspension since it launched for 2019, with air suspension available, and it is often the full-size truck people pick for ride comfort. For Colorado the engine story is what matters: 2019-2024 trucks offer the 5.7L Hemi, a 3.6L V6 and, through 2023, the EcoDiesel. For 2025 Ram switched to the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six, then brought the Hemi back for 2026.

How it fits Colorado
Scored 1 to 5 for the way people here actually drive. These are our judgments, based on the facts below. Select a rating for the reasoning.
-
4x4 is widely available and the available air suspension can lower for entry, but like any full-size truck it needs good tires on a snowy pass.
-
The 2025+ Hurricane is twin-turbocharged and rated at 420 or 540 hp; the Hemi and 3.6L V6 are naturally aspirated and lose more power up high.
-
Ram rates the 2025 Hurricane truck at up to 11,580 pounds, and the 2019-2024 Hemi truck was rated at up to 12,750 pounds when properly equipped.
-
Rebel and RHO trims add off-road hardware, but a full-size crew cab is long for tight Colorado trails.
-
The EPA rates 2025 4WD trucks at 19 mpg combined with the standard Hurricane and 21 mpg with the 3.6L V6.
-
The crew cab grew about 4 inches in wheelbase for 2019, with the extra length going to the rear seat, and crew cabs come with a 5-foot-7 or 6-foot-4 bed.
Which 1500 generation to look at
5th generation (Hurricane update) 2025-present
Ram dropped the Hemi for 2025 and added the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six at 420 hp and 469 lb-ft, or 540 hp and 521 lb-ft in High Output form, alongside the 3.6L V6. The 5.7L Hemi returned for 2026 at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft.
- High Output and RHO trucks require premium fuel per the EPA
- 2025 maximum tow rating is 11,580 pounds, lower than the old Hemi's 12,750
- Confirm whether the truck has the four-corner air suspension, which changes ride and load behavior
- Run the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup, as with any newer truck
5th generation (Hemi, V6 and EcoDiesel) 2019-2024
Launched for 2019 with coil-spring rear suspension, optional air springs and the eTorque 48-volt mild-hybrid system on the 3.6L V6 and 5.7L Hemi. The 3.0L EcoDiesel (260 hp, 480 lb-ft) was offered through the 2023 model year.
- About 1.23 million 2019 and 2021-2024 Ram 1500s were recalled in 2024 for an ABS module software fault that could disable electronic stability control; the fix is a free software update
- A December 2022 recall covered tailgates that could open unintentionally while driving; check the VIN
- EcoDiesel trucks are only available used and were last built for 2023, so check service records closely
- Verify the tow package and axle ratio before trusting the 12,750-pound headline number

The 1500 for Colorado buyers
Hemi or Hurricane: what changes at altitude
This is the decision that matters most for a Colorado Ram buyer. The 5.7L Hemi and the 3.6L V6 are naturally aspirated. The 3.0L Hurricane inline-six that arrived for 2025 is twin-turbocharged, rated at 420 hp and 469 lb-ft in standard form and 540 hp and 521 lb-ft in High Output form.
Turbo maker Garrett cites a rule of thumb that a naturally aspirated engine loses about 3 percent of its power per 1,000 feet of elevation, and explains that a turbo compensates by packing more air into the cylinders. So a Hemi climbing toward the Eisenhower Tunnel is working with noticeably less than its sea-level rating, while a Hurricane should hold more of its output. That's published physics, not a test we ran.
The Hemi still has fans for its sound and simplicity, and Ram brought it back for 2026 at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft. If you're shopping a 2025, though, there is no Hemi option. Tell us what you want through our specific vehicle request and we'll look for the right year and engine.
Towing campers and trailers
Ram rates the 2025 Ram 1500 at up to 11,580 pounds of towing and 2,300 pounds of payload when properly configured. The outgoing Hemi truck could be rated up to 12,750 pounds, and the 2023 EcoDiesel up to 12,560 pounds. Those are best-case numbers for one build each.
For a real trailer decision, read the payload on the driver's door-jamb sticker, confirm the axle ratio (Ram offers 3.21, 3.55 and 3.92 ratios on Hurricane trucks) and add up tongue weight, people and gear. The tow rating printed for that exact configuration is what counts.
Long grades are where Colorado separates good tow setups from marginal ones. Our guide to towing a camper in the mountains covers grade descents, brake heat and how to size a trailer to the truck.
Ride, air suspension and winter roads
Ram has used coil springs at the rear since well before this generation, and the 2019 redesign kept them, with adjustable air springs available. On 2025 trucks the air system has five modes, including entry/exit, aero, normal and two off-road heights. On a washboard road to a trailhead or a frost-heaved county road, that's a big part of why people choose a Ram.
In snow, a 4x4 Ram behaves like any full-size truck with a light rear end. Some 4x4 Rams have an automatic 4WD position on the selector and some don't, so look at the dial on the truck you're considering. Tires matter more than anything else: CDOT's Traction Law on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero runs from September 1 to May 31 and focuses on tread depth and tire rating, or chains.
Our guide to buying a used car for Colorado winters has a winter checklist that works for trucks too.
Recalls and used-truck checks
Run every Ram 1500 VIN through NHTSA. The largest recent campaign covered about 1.23 million 2019 and 2021-2024 trucks with an ABS module software fault that could disable electronic stability control. Stellantis said the brakes still work, and the fix is a free software update. A December 2022 recall covered tailgates that could open on their own while driving.
EcoDiesel trucks have a loyal following for towing range, and the 2023 version was rated at 260 hp and 480 lb-ft. They've been out of production since the 2023 model year, so ask for service records and look for a truck that's been maintained by the book.
Hail is common on the Front Range, and a big truck has a lot of roof and hood to dent. Our article on hail damage and used cars explains what to look for. If you're trading in a truck, start on our sell page.

Ram 1500 questions
Is the Ram 1500 Hurricane better than the Hemi at altitude?
On paper, yes. The Hurricane is twin-turbocharged, and turbo engines hold power better in thin air; a common rule of thumb says naturally aspirated engines lose about 3 percent per 1,000 feet. The Hemi still works fine in Colorado, it just gives up more power at elevation.
How much can a Ram 1500 tow?
Ram rates the 2025 truck at up to 11,580 pounds when properly equipped. 2019-2024 Hemi trucks were rated up to 12,750 pounds and the 2023 EcoDiesel up to 12,560 pounds. Check the specific truck's tow package, axle ratio and door-jamb sticker, and see our guide to towing a camper in the mountains.
Did Ram bring back the Hemi?
Yes. Ram dropped the 5.7L Hemi for the 2025 model year and brought it back for 2026, rated at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft with eTorque. If you want a Hemi used, look at 2019-2024 or 2026 trucks.
What mpg does the Ram 1500 get?
The EPA rates 2025 4WD trucks at 19 mpg combined with the standard Hurricane, 21 mpg with the 3.6L V6, 17 mpg with the Hurricane High Output and 15 mpg for the RHO. HO and RHO trucks call for premium fuel.
Is the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel still available?
Only used. The 2023 model year was the last for the 1500 EcoDiesel, rated at 260 hp and 480 lb-ft with up to 12,560 pounds of towing. Ask for full service records on any diesel truck.
What is the Ram 1500 stability control recall?
In 2024 Stellantis recalled about 1.23 million 2019 and 2021-2024 Ram 1500s for an ABS module software fault that could disable electronic stability control. The brakes still work, and dealers fix it with a free software update.
Is a Ram 1500 good in snow?
With 4x4 and good tires, yes. Like any full-size truck, an empty bed means less weight over the rear wheels, so winter or all-weather tires with deep tread matter most. Check whether the truck's 4WD selector has an automatic setting.
Ram 1500 or Silverado 1500 for Colorado?
Choose the Ram if ride comfort and a turbo six are your priorities. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is worth comparing if you want the efficient Duramax diesel or a higher maximum tow rating.
How we review
This is a buyer's review, not a road test. We compile facts from the sources below (manufacturer information, EPA fuel economy data, NHTSA recall records and similar), then add our view as a Colorado brokerage on how the vehicle suits winter, altitude, towing and trail use. Ratings are our editorial judgment. Specifications change by year and trim, so we confirm details for any specific vehicle before you buy. Spotted something wrong? Tell us and we'll correct it.
