Subaru Crosstrek review for Colorado buyers

The Crosstrek is the most affordable way into a Subaru with standard all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and it's a natural fit for Colorado commuters who also want trailhead access. The catch is the base 2.0-liter: 148 to 152 hp is thin at altitude. For mountain driving, shop 2021 and newer cars with the 182 hp 2.5-liter, or the 2024+ Wilderness if you want more clearance and 3,500-pound towing.

Verdict

Best for
  • First-time Subaru buyers who want AWD and clearance in a small package
  • Commuters who park in tight spots but drive snowy roads
  • Solo drivers or couples with bikes and skis
  • Anyone who wants a manual transmission with AWD (2023 and older)
Think twice if
  • You regularly carry four adults over mountain passes
  • Your budget only reaches a 2.0-liter and you live above 8,000 feet
  • You need real towing capacity and aren't buying a Wilderness
  • You need a lot of cargo space behind the rear seat
Our editorial rating

How it fits Colorado

Scored 1 to 5 for the way people here actually drive. These are our judgments, based on the facts below. Select a rating for the reasoning.

  • Standard all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of clearance work well in snow, though the small 2.0-liter limits how confidently it merges and climbs.

Model years

Which Crosstrek generation to look at

3rd generation 2024-present

Redesigned for 2024 with the Wilderness trim added (9.3 inches of clearance, 3,500-pound towing). The manual is gone. A base 2.0-liter continued through 2025; for 2026 every gas Crosstrek uses the 180 hp 2.5-liter, and a new 194 hp hybrid joined the lineup.

What to check on a used one
  • Recall 23V551: on some 2024 models the instrument panel wiring may contact the steering beam bracket and short
  • Recall 23V754: front driveshaft outer race on some 2024 models may crack
  • Recall 26V685: left-front lower ball joint castle nut on some 2026 models may be improperly fastened
  • Recall 26V106: on certain 2026 Crosstrek Hybrids, fuel can expand and spill from a nearly full tank as temperatures rise

The Crosstrek for Colorado buyers

Why Coloradans buy so many Crosstreks

The Crosstrek's appeal is simple: it's a compact hatchback with standard all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the same clearance Subaru quotes for the larger Forester and Outback. That's a lot of clearance for something easy to park in LoDo or a Boulder side street.

It's also efficient. EPA rates CVT gas Crosstreks at 29 to 30 mpg combined, which helps if you commute from the foothills. If you want something bigger with the same AWD system, read our Subaru Forester review.

2.0 or 2.5: the engine choice that matters most

The 2.0-liter powers base and Premium trims through 2025 and is rated at 148 hp on 2016-2017 cars and 152 hp on 2018-2025 cars. At sea level that's modest. At Colorado altitude, where naturally aspirated engines lose some of their rated power, it can feel slow merging onto I-70 or passing on a two-lane highway over a pass.

From 2021, Subaru made a 182 hp 2.5-liter standard on the Sport and Limited trims, and it's standard on every Wilderness. For 2026, every gas Crosstrek gets the 2.5. EPA ratings barely change between the two engines (29 mpg combined for most 2.5-liter years versus 29 to 30 for the 2.0), so in Colorado we'd steer most buyers toward a 2.5-liter car if the budget allows.

Tell us your budget and must-haves and we can find a 2.5-liter Crosstrek instead of you sorting through listings that don't say which engine is under the hood.

Manual, CVT and X-Mode

If you want to row your own gears with all-wheel drive, the Crosstrek offered a manual through 2023 on 2.0-liter cars, and EPA listings show no manual for 2024 or later.

The tradeoff is X-Mode. On the 2018 redesign, X-Mode came on CVT-equipped models, so a manual Crosstrek doesn't have it. Manual cars are also rated lower, at 25 to 26 mpg combined versus 29 to 30 for the CVT.

On the CVT side, Subaru extended CVT coverage to 10 years or 100,000 miles for 2016-2019 2.0-liter models (not 2020 and newer). Coverage starts from the original in-service date, so have a Subaru retailer check the VIN.

Snow tires, the Traction Law and the Wilderness

AWD alone doesn't satisfy CDOT's Traction Law. On I-70 from Morrison to Dotsero between September 1 and May 31, you need tires with at least 3/16 inch of tread and a winter, all-weather or M+S rating, or chains or an approved traction device. A Crosstrek on good winter tires is a capable snow car; on worn all-seasons, it isn't. More in our guide to buying a used car for Colorado winters.

The Wilderness (2024 and newer) is the one to get if you drive rough roads often. Subaru gives it 9.3 inches of clearance, the 2.5-liter, all-terrain tires and a 3,500-pound tow rating, more than double the 1,500 pounds of other trims. EPA rates it at 26 to 27 mpg combined, a few mpg below other Crosstreks.

Plug-in hybrid vs the new hybrid

Two different cars have worn the Crosstrek Hybrid name in this range, and buyers mix them up. The 2019-2023 version is a plug-in hybrid with a 17-mile EPA electric range and a 35 mpg combined rating on gas. It's useful for short commutes if you can charge at home. Check recall 23V080 on these, which covers a 12-volt battery feed terminal that can corrode and break.

The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is a conventional hybrid you never plug in. Subaru rates it at 194 hp combined with 8.7 inches of clearance and X-Mode, and the EPA rates it at 36 mpg combined. It's the best Crosstrek for mixed commuting, and it's more powerful than any gas Crosstrek.

Whichever you pick, check for hail history before you buy, since Front Range hail is a fact of life for cars parked outside. See hail damage and used cars.

FAQ

Subaru Crosstrek questions

Is the Subaru Crosstrek good in snow?

Yes, with the right tires. It has standard all-wheel drive, 8.7 inches of ground clearance and, on 2018 and newer CVT models, X-Mode. On I-70 you'll need tires with 3/16 inch of tread and a winter, all-weather or M+S rating to meet the Traction Law.

Is the Subaru Crosstrek underpowered?

With the 2.0-liter, many Colorado drivers will think so: it makes 148 to 152 hp. The 182 hp 2.5-liter on 2021 and newer Sport, Limited and Wilderness trims, and on every 2026 gas model, is noticeably stronger with nearly the same EPA fuel economy.

Which Subaru Crosstrek years should I avoid?

No year here is a clear one to avoid, but 2018-2019 models have the most recalls to verify, including PCV valve, engine computer and power steering campaigns. 2019-2022 plug-in hybrids need the 12-volt terminal recall (23V080). Ask for recall completion records on any of those years.

Can a Subaru Crosstrek tow?

Lightly. Subaru rates current non-Wilderness Crosstreks at 1,500 pounds and the Wilderness at 3,500 pounds. That covers a small utility trailer, bike trailer or small teardrop on the Wilderness.

Is the Crosstrek Hybrid a plug-in?

The 2019-2023 Crosstrek Hybrid is a plug-in with a 17-mile EPA electric range. The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is a regular hybrid that charges itself, rated at 194 hp and 36 mpg combined.

Does the manual Crosstrek have X-Mode?

No. When the second generation launched for 2018, X-Mode came with the CVT, so manual cars do without. If X-Mode matters to you, shop CVT models.

Is the Crosstrek Wilderness worth it in Colorado?

If you drive dirt roads or tow a small trailer, yes. It adds 9.3 inches of clearance, all-terrain tires, the 2.5-liter and a 3,500-pound tow rating. If you mostly commute, a Sport or Limited with the same engine and good winter tires gets better mileage.

Subaru Crosstrek or Toyota RAV4?

The Crosstrek is smaller and has standard AWD with more ground clearance than most RAV4s. The RAV4 has more interior space and a hybrid with higher EPA ratings in most years. See our Toyota RAV4 review.

How we review

This is a buyer's review, not a road test. We compile facts from the sources below (manufacturer information, EPA fuel economy data, NHTSA recall records and similar), then add our view as a Colorado brokerage on how the vehicle suits winter, altitude, towing and trail use.
