Jeep Grand Cherokee review for Colorado buyers
The Grand Cherokee is the Jeep for people who want a comfortable, upscale SUV that can still handle snow, dirt roads and a trailer. Choose the right 4x4 system and engine and it's one of the better Colorado all-rounders: up to 7,200 lb of towing with the V8, a two-speed transfer case on many versions and available air suspension. The catch is complexity. Recalls are frequent, especially on the 4xe plug-in, so the specific vehicle's history matters as much as the model.

How it fits Colorado
Scored 1 to 5 for the way people here actually drive. These are our judgments, based on the facts below. Select a rating for the reasoning.
-
Quadra-Trac and Quadra-Drive systems manage 4WD automatically, so it handles mixed snow and dry pavement without driver input, as long as the tires are right.
-
The V8, the 4xe and the 2026 Hurricane turbo four all have strong torque, though the base 3.6L V6 is naturally aspirated and feels elevation more.
-
Jeep rates the 5.7L V8 at up to 7,200 lb and the V6 and Hurricane four at up to 6,200 lb, more than most midsize SUVs.
-
Quadra-Lift air suspension offers up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance and there's a low range on Quadra-Trac II, but this is a comfort-first SUV, not a rock crawler.
-
EPA ratings of 21-22 mpg combined for the V6 are reasonable for the size, and the 4xe can run short trips on electricity.
-
The two-row seats five comfortably, and the Grand Cherokee L adds a third row for six or seven.

The Grand Cherokee for Colorado buyers
Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II
Jeep offers three 4x4 systems, and the name on the console tells you a lot. Quadra-Trac I uses a single-speed transfer case with no low range, and Jeep's manual says it isn't meant for conditions where 4WD Low is recommended. It's fine for snowy highways and graded dirt roads.
Quadra-Trac II adds a two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low range. That's the one to look for if you'll use steep forest roads, tow a trailer up a boat ramp or deal with deep snow at a cabin. Quadra-Drive II adds a rear electronic limited-slip differential on top of that, and it's what the trail-oriented Trailhawk uses.
There are also rear-wheel-drive Grand Cherokees. They show up on used lots more often than you'd expect, so confirm it's a 4x4 before you go any further. For most Colorado drivers, any of the three Quadra systems will handle I-70 in winter well, since they manage traction automatically. On WL models, Jeep notes the front axle can disconnect when 4WD isn't needed to save fuel, then re-engage on its own.
Winter driving and the traction law
Automatic 4WD is a real advantage on Colorado highways where conditions change by the mile. You don't need to remember to shift into 4HI between Idaho Springs and the tunnel. Combined with good tires, a Grand Cherokee is a confident winter commuter.
Tires are still what the law cares about. Colorado's traction law, active on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September through May, requires tires with at least 3/16 inch of tread rated M+S, all-weather or winter, or chains or an approved alternative. Look closely at what's on the vehicle, since tires on Grand Cherokees range from highway all-seasons to low-profile tires on big wheels, and they behave very differently in snow. Our guide to buying a used car for Colorado winters covers what to look for.
If the Jeep has Quadra-Lift air suspension, raising it a setting can help in deep, unplowed snow. Check that every height setting works on a test drive, because air suspension repairs can get expensive on an older WK2.
Towing a camper over the passes
This is where the Grand Cherokee separates itself from most midsize SUVs. Jeep rates the 5.7L V8 at up to 7,200 lb on both the WK2 and WL generations. The 3.6L V6 is rated at up to 6,200 lb, as is the 2026 Hurricane 4 turbo, and the 4xe at up to 6,000 lb. Those are maximums for properly equipped vehicles, so check the hitch, cooling package and door-jamb ratings on the specific SUV.
For mountain towing, torque matters more than the headline rating. The V6 is naturally aspirated, and turbo maker Garrett Motion notes that engines like it lose roughly 3 percent of their power per 1,000 feet of elevation. The V8, the 4xe's 470 lb-ft and the turbocharged Hurricane four are better suited to pulling up long grades at altitude.
If you're planning regular trips with a camper, read our notes on towing a camper in the mountains. For heavier trailers, a Chevrolet Tahoe or full-size pickup is the safer tool.
Grand Cherokee 4xe: what to know first
The 4xe pairs a 2.0L turbo four with electric motors for 375 hp and 470 lb-ft. EPA rates it at 26 miles of electric range (Jeep quotes 25), 56 MPGe and 23 mpg combined on gas. For a commuter with home charging, a lot of short trips can be electric. Cold weather reduces EV efficiency, and fueleconomy.gov recommends preheating the cabin while plugged in.
The recall history is the bigger concern. Jeep has recalled 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe models for a high-voltage battery that can fail and catch fire, most recently under 25V741, with owners told to park outside and not charge until repaired. Some 2023-2025 4xe models are also recalled for engine debris that can cause engine failure, and there's a software recall for loss of drive power.
None of that means you can't buy one, but you should only buy one with the recall work documented, or with a clear plan to get it done and somewhere to park outside until then.
Two-row or Grand Cherokee L
The Grand Cherokee L, sold since the 2021 model year, adds a third row and seats six or seven depending on whether it has second-row captain's chairs or a bench. It's longer, so it gives up a little maneuverability on tight trailhead lots, but it's a real option for families who'd otherwise look at a Toyota Highlander or Kia Telluride.
The two-row model seats five and is the better choice if you mostly carry two to four people plus skis or bikes. EPA ratings are close, with the V6 two-row at 22 mpg combined and the V6 L at 21 mpg.
If you're cross-shopping, the Highlander is simpler and more efficient as a hybrid, while the Grand Cherokee offers more towing and low-range options. That's the core trade.
What to check on a used Grand Cherokee
Run the VIN first. On WK2 models, confirm the 2014-2015 shifter rollaway update and the brake booster repairs on 2011-2014 trucks. EcoDiesel models have several emissions and fuel system recalls. On WL models, check the rear coil spring, upper ball joint and steering shaft recalls, plus the long list of camera and display updates.
Then test the electronics. Make sure the screens, cameras, parking sensors and 4x4 mode selector all work, and that the air suspension (if equipped) moves through every height. These are the systems that cost the most to fix out of warranty.
Finally, check for hail. A Grand Cherokee's big hood and roof show dents easily, and Colorado claims history affects value. Our article on hail damage and used cars explains what to look for. If you'd rather we track down a clean, documented example, start with our vehicle search service.

Jeep Grand Cherokee questions
Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee good in snow?
Yes. Every 4x4 Grand Cherokee uses a Quadra system that manages 4WD automatically without driver input, which suits changing mountain conditions. Good tires are still essential, and Colorado's traction law requires 3/16 inch of tread on M+S, all-weather or winter tires, or chains.
Which Grand Cherokee 4x4 system should I get?
Quadra-Trac I is fine for snowy highways and graded dirt, but it has no low range. Quadra-Trac II adds a two-speed transfer case with low range, which is the best fit for most Colorado buyers who tow or use steep roads. Quadra-Drive II adds a rear electronic limited-slip for more trail use.
How much can a Jeep Grand Cherokee tow?
Jeep rates the 5.7L V8 at up to 7,200 lb, the 3.6L V6 and 2026 Hurricane 4 turbo at up to 6,200 lb and the 4xe at up to 6,000 lb, properly equipped. Check the specific vehicle's ratings and towing equipment before hooking up a camper.
Is the Grand Cherokee 4xe reliable?
It has a significant recall history. Jeep has recalled 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe models for high-voltage battery fire risk, and some 2023-2025 models for engine debris. Only buy one with the recall work documented, or a clear plan to complete it and a place to park outside.
What's the difference between the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L?
The L is a longer three-row version that seats six or seven, sold since the 2021 model year. The regular Grand Cherokee seats five. EPA ratings are close, with the V6 two-row at 22 mpg combined and the V6 L at 21 mpg.
Does the Grand Cherokee still have a V8?
Not on recent two-row models. The 5.7L V8 was offered on the WK2, on the two-row WL through 2023 and on the Grand Cherokee L through 2024, according to EPA listings. For 2026 Jeep added the 2.0L Hurricane 4 turbo. If you want V8 towing, shop a 2024 or earlier model.
What gas mileage does the Grand Cherokee get?
EPA rates the V6 at 21-22 mpg combined, the V8 at 17 mpg, the 2026 Hurricane four at 22 mpg and the 4xe at 23 mpg on gas plus 56 MPGe on electricity. The older EcoDiesel was rated at 24 mpg combined.
What recalls should I check on a used Grand Cherokee?
On 2014-2015 models, the shifter rollaway update. On 2011-2014 models, brake booster corrosion. On EcoDiesels, EGR cooler and fuel pump recalls. On 2021-2023 WL and L models, rear coil spring and ball joint recalls. On any 4xe, the battery fire recall. Run the full VIN on NHTSA's site.
